Rhodesian Ridgeback Dogs - History

Rhodesian Ridgebacks originated in the 16th century in colonial Southern Africa. They were bred from the Hottentots' dogs and a number of other breeds, such as the Bloodhound, Pointer, Mastiff, Greyhound and some others. This unique breed appeared because the European settlers needed a multi-purpose dog to hunt lions, to guard the farms and to be a family companion, which is safe with children.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Dogs - Temperament

Rhodesian ridgebacks are very intelligent, athletic, independent and strong-willed, as they were developed to be hunting dogs that should have no fear of big game. To develop a stable temperament such dogs have to be socialized early in life and they need an owner able to dominate and train the dog properly.

Rhodesian ridgebacks make excellent pets for the whole family and love to be with people, but form close bonds with only one person. These dogs can make good guardians because they are aloof and naturally cautious with strangers. They bark rarely, but can be relied on in an emergency. Rhodesian ridgebacks are loyal with small children and will readily accept cats and other dogs, if trained properly. They are usually quiet and gentle.

These dogs don't want to be left alone and should by no means be kept on a chain in the yard. They easily become bored and destructive. To make your Rhodesian Ridgeback happy you have to understand its mentality and never be harsh with the dog. These dogs may appear stubborn and non trainable to the novice, but they need only positive motivation, such as a treat or a petting, and they need to respect the owner. Rhodesian Ridgebacks will not do what you ask them to do if they do not get a reward.
