Cornelius van Rooyen acquired some dogs for hunting big game and started to perfect working qualities of the breed crossing it with the Greyhound, Pointer, Collie, terrier, and Great Dane. Breed fanciers drew up a standard in 1922, formed a club and started to promote the breed.
