These dogs became popular in the 19th century; in the 1920s the big game hunting decreased and this breed might disappear, if not standardized and managed. The breed standard was accepted in 1924. Today these dogs make wonderful pets and guardians.

This breed originated in South Africa to help hunters, chasing, catching and pulling down lesser game and their main aim was to distract the lion’s attention while the hunter could come closer and shoot it. This task required cunning, intelligence, athleticism and agility. Rhodesian ridgbacks are dogs that breeders enjoy training because of their intelligence.
