Rhodesian Ridgeback Dogs - Choosing a Breeder

Every prospective owner of Rhodesian ridgebacks should choose a breeder very carefully, because the health and trainability of the dog depends greatly on living conditions and pedigree. All reputable breeders should be members of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the United States or other organizations abiding strictly to the code of ethic.
Ethical breeders produce dogs not for profit, but for improvement of the breed. They screen all the breeding stock prior to mating to avoid hereditary defects. Only with a reputable specialist are you sure to get a high quality dog with a pedigree, health certificate and life long guarantee. Reputable specialists make a distinction between show-quality and pet-quality puppies. They will sell dogs with minor defects at a discount but these dogs cannot take part in competitions that are for purebred dogs. However, dogs with minor defects possess the same instinct and make excellent working dogs and family pets. Such animals should be spayed or neutered.
There exist so-called backyard breeders who own a couple of dogs and breed them for the sole purpose of profit. They usually don't provide a health guarantee and have little experience in breeding, so they are better not to be trusted.
Never buy puppies from pet shops and puppy mills because these organizations are profit-oriented and don't care much about the puppies' health and welfare. A Rhodesian Ridgeback from a pet shop may be purebred, but may not have been examined for genetic faults. The litters are probably not planned and the puppies are not likely to be socialized and trained. AKC registered Rhodesian Ridgebacks from pet shops only means that their parents are purebred.
