The breed standard was developed in 1922. The main feature in the dogs’ appearance is the ridge of fur across the back, which is formed by the hair growing in the opposite direction. The ridge consists of two crowns and should be symmetrical.

The breed originated in the 16th century in South Africa when European settlers found domesticated dogs and crossbred them with the dogs from the European continent. The main aim of the breed was to hunt partridge, deer, even lions, and other African animals.
